Our first night at Hostal del Lago happened to be their weekly kareoke and open mic night, and before we even had a chance to ask about it, they saw Alex and Stephen’s guitars and told us we’d be going on around 8.
So, that day, we practiced the songs we knew best, and put togethet a set for the show.
A screechy, high-spirited and alcohol-fueled 15-song karaoke encore that finally ended with Bohemian Rhapsody pushed back the start of our set to around 9:30, which gave us plenty of time to calm our nerves with a few 15 quetzal ($2) beers.
We took the stage, with Stephen stepping in front of the main microphone and introducing us: “Somos Líricos Jíricos. It’s a nonsensical name I made up… This is our first performance, we hope you like it.”
We began with Jack Johnson’s ‘Flake,’ with vocals and lead guitar by Stephen, followed by SOJA’s ‘When We Were Younger,’ with vocals and lead guitar by Alex, then an original song with vocals and lead guitar by Stephen, and ending with an original guitar riff from Alex that Max freestyled over.
Other than the sound being a bit too quiet, we thought the set went pretty well, and we walked away satisfied with our first organized live performance.
